Abstract We conducted a literature search to identify reports of the use of the Internet or email to collect data in health related surveys. We identified 21 surveys using email, Internet user groups, bulletin boards and World Wide Web pages. We reviewed our experience of conducting three email surveys. Response rates in reported surveys are typically low (median 34%) but frequently could not be calculated because the denominator was unknown. Authors frequently underestimate the limitations of survey results, particularly the effects of selection bias. We developed a set of recommendations for the conduct of email survey research in the health field.
